Japan has transferred an undisclosed number of Toyota High Mobility Vehicles (HMV) to Ukraine, the Japanese Embassy in Kyiv reported.
The delivery is part of a support package decided by Japan’s Ministry of Defense and Self-Defense Forces in October 2025, with the final batch arriving in Poland on January 12.
Developed in the 1990s, the HMV was designed to replace old jeeps and trucks, offering greater mobility and versatility. The model is used for troop and equipment transport and also as a platform for mounting communication systems and weapons, being employed in military exercises, peacekeeping missions, and logistical operations.
The vehicle features 4×4 drive, a diesel engine of approximately 150–170 hp, and a top speed between 100 and 110 km/h. Weighing between 2.5 and 3 tons, the HMV can carry up to 1 ton of cargo and transport 8–10 fully equipped soldiers.
The modular body allows for different configurations, including open or armored cabin versions. Ukraine received a light version with a canvas cover, which can be adapted for machine guns, anti-tank missiles, or light anti-air systems, increasing the vehicle’s operational flexibility on the battlefield.
